christ umc history

Christ UMC has a rich history that has shaped our congregation and our priorities, molding us to who we are today. We have relocated to multiple locations throughout Lansdale. We have undergone numerous construction projects. We have even been known by different names.  And yet the people of Christ UMC have remained faithful no matter their location or name to following God’s call to make disciples for the transformation of the world.

From our early beginnings as part of the Orvilla Road circuit to the present-day celebration of our 150th anniversary, Christ United Methodist remained committed to our mission of transforming lives in the love of Jesus Christ. We look to the future and follow our vision to Encounter Christ, Grow Disciples and Serve Others.

Feel free to browse the brief timeline and history of Christ UMC below. For a deeper look into our history, see the linked 100th and 125th anniversary booklets.

  • Although we are now, through mergers, a United Methodist Church, Christ United Methodist Church has its roots in the Evangelical Association Church, which existed prior to 1875 in our area in the form of a ‘circuit’. The circuit consisted of a number of churches being served by one minister and assisted by laymen. Christ United was part of this circuit in a church building built in 1867 on Orvilla Road. While we no longer own the church building, we do still own the cemetery at this site.

  • On March 27, 1875, the newly named Grace Evangelical Church was dedicated in a new building on Mt Vernon Street, just west of Broad Street. The lot for this church building was purchased for just $5. This is considered the official birthdate of our church in Lansdale.

  • In 1891, due to a split within the denomination, Grace Evangelical split into two groups: Grace Evangelical Church and Bethany United Evangelical Church. Bethany built their church in 1895 at 145 Green Street in Lansdale.

Grace and Bethany Churches worshiped as two congregations for 32 years. Then in 1923, the Evangelical Association and United Evangelical denominations merged and so Grace and Bethany reunited. Upon merger, the name Christ Evangelical United Brethren Church was adopted and the Green Street location became its home as the building was newer.

  • By 1957, limited space at the Green Street location became an issue, and further expansion was needed. Ten acres on Valley Forge Road were purchased for the construction of a new building, which began in May of 1961. The cornerstone was laid in September of 1961, and a dedication service was held on June 17, 1962. The original Moller pipe organ was relocated from the Green Street Church to the new Valley Forge location by the end of 1962.

In 1963, a parsonage was built adjacent to the church building to provide a residence for the Pastor. In 1968, the name was changed to Christ United Methodist Church after the merger of the Evangelical United Brethren and the Methodist Episcopal denominations. In 1984, further growth in the church congregation necessitated the construction of the Fellowship Hall/educational wing, a balcony and a narthex. Four second floor classrooms were added in 1986, a new fiberglass steeple was erected in 1989.

In 1998, a new organ console was dedicated, and in 1999 a new educational wing, also used by our Preschool, was dedicated. In 2017 the expansion of the narthex was completed.  Included in this expansion was the addition of an electronic sign, an organ upgrade, and improvements to make the building more accessible.
