Christ UMC Mission Statement: Transforming Lives in the Loves of Jesus Christ

Christ UMC Vision Statement: Encounter Christ | Grow Disciples | Serve Others

Both of these statements speak to how seriously we take our commitment to living out our faith at CUMC. Volunteering and service work are essential to our ability to operate as Christians in the greater community and in our regular Sunday worship. If you'd like to get involved as a volunteer, sign up using the links below. If you would like more information about a volunteer ministry or have any questions, email the church office or call 215-855-1643.

regularly occuring volunteer roles

  • --Serve as Liturgist: Liturgists lead multiple times throughout the service including the Call to Worship, the Opening Hymn announcement (not singing!), Opening Prayer, Prayers of the People, and the Lord's Prayer. The Prayers of the People is the time for you to lead the congregation in a prayer that you have written before the service. Pastor Zach and Pastor Tawny are always happy to provide help with writing or checking over the prayer throughout the week. You can find a more detailed description here. You can sign up to serve on the SignUpGenius or contact the church office.

--Serve as Scripture Reader: Scripture readers are responsible for only the Scripture reading each week. This is emailed each Thursday, and a print copy is provided at the lectern to be used during the service. The pastor will announce your name at the appropriate time. You will come to the lectern, announce and read the scripture, and then end with the response (typically, "This is the Word of God for us." to which the congregation will reply "Thanks be to God."). You can sign up to serve on the SignUpGenius or contact the church office.

  • --Serve as a Greeter: Greeters welcome people as they enter the church. They help direct those who are unfamiliar with our church to important places such as the nursery, the restrooms, the welcome table, etc. You can sign up to serve on the SignUpGenius.

--Serve as an Usher: Ushers welcome people and hand out the service bulletin at the entrance to the Sanctuary. They also collect the offering and assist with communion by dismissing people from their pews to go up for communion. You can sign up to serve on the SignUpGenius.

  • The A/V crew work together to provide a meaningful worship experience for our in-person and online worshippers. Whether we are live-streaming a service, assisting with a musical group rehearsal, or working after hours to update equipment and programming, we are always bringing glory to God through our efforts. We need many people with musical ears, multiple people with an eye for art and presentation, and a handful of more technical electronic focused people. If you've ever thought "that doesn't sound right" or "that slide is hard to read" then come help us make it better! You can get involved by training to be a worship sound technician, praise band sound technician, or video technician. For more information, please contact Jen Hopple. You can sign up to serve on the SignUpGenius.

  • --Serve as Acolyte: Volunteers of all ages, but especially our children, are encouraged to assist during worship as acolytes. Acolytes are the volunteers who light the candles in worship as well as assist with communion and offering. You can sign up to serve on the SignUpGenius. (Children must be tall enough to reach the altar table.)

  • There are many other volunteer opportunities available at our church throughout the year. Many of these are recurring events, such as the Spaghetti Dinner and Santa Breakfast, seasonal clean-up days, and weekly youth meetings and rehearsals, while others are special one-time events. No matter the type of event, one consistent area in which we are always looking for more people to serve is as our second adult for any event that involves children and youth.

If you enjoy working with children or want to help guide our students on their journey toward faithful adulthood, this ministry is for you! Any interested adult needs to be Safe Sanctuary Approved before they can serve as a second adult within the church. This approval process, open to adults who have had an active relationship with our congregation for at least 6 months, requires clearances and a brief training session with one of our staff. If you have ever served as a volunteer at your student’s school, you likely already have the majority of the work completed!

If you are interested in being added to our list of Safe Sanctuary Approved Adults, please contact Pastor Tawny or complete the interest form here.

  • Each Sunday, we provided refreshment snacks for between services and the end of the 11:00 service. Volunteers donate prepackaged snacks so that we can provide this hospitality to all who worship at CUMC. Please provide 30 prepackaged snacks. ***ALL SNACKS MUST BE NUT/PEANUT FREE.*** Common choices are granola bars, rice krispie treats, etc. Please drop off snacks to the cafe the week before with the labeled date or before the end of 8:30am service.  There will be label stickers in the drawer for you to label your donation.  Please place them in the leftmost cabinets above the counter or the cabinet under the cafe. You can sign up to provide snacks on the SignUpGenius.

  • Please review the available slots to sign up for either Tractor duty, Push Mower duty, or both. The dates indicated are the Monday of the week that you are signing up for. Feel free to perform your job any day between Monday and Saturday of that week. If weather prevents you from completing your job, please email Tim Weir. Please delete your name from the Sign Up if you do not actually mow on the week you scheduled. Every effort should be made to avoid cutting grass on Sunday and grass should not be cut on Sunday morning. You can sign up to serve on the SignUpGenius

If you would like to be trained on the tractor, please email Tim Weir.

  • Youth Group is typically held on the 2nd Sunday of each month. Youth Group starts with dinner from 5:30-6:00 and leads into the Youth Group meeting from 6:00-7:15. Typically there are about 11-18 people in attendance.

If you would like to provide dinner and join in fellowship with the youth, please sign up on the SignUpGeniusAll meals need to be free from peanuts and tree nuts, as well as free from risk of contaminations with peanuts and tree nuts, due to allergies within the Youth Group.

event-specific volunteer roles

  • Prayer Fest will be both a celebration of CUMC’s historical prayers to God over 150 years and a training event for the current congregation to launch further into seeking God in prayer. there will be interactive stations open all day--feel free to come and go as you wish. This family event for all ages will include a children’s prayer workshop for kids ages 4+ and nursery care provided for those 3 and under.

We are looking for help to make this event happen! Descriptions of the various positions needed are below. You can sign up to serve on the SignUpGenius.

--Set-Up Leaders and Team Members - This group would be responsible for setting up tables, chairs, lights, extension cords, etc. on either Friday night or Saturday Morning.

--Tear Down Leaders and Team Members - This group would be responsible for putting all areas back in their normal set-up configurations so that the church building is ready for Saturday evening and Sunday activities.

--Registration Desk - Welcome participants.  Give out program guide and answer questions regarding locations of various activities.

--Station Leader - This person would create one or more prayer stations using a theme that has been approved by Rich and Sue, who will communicate with the committee.  This person could work independently and would not necessarily need to be present on the day of Prayer Fest.  We would expect that most stations would not require a person sitting at the table.  (See Area Monitor).  Although we would request that there be one lead person, this function could easily be done by a group who wanted to work together.  They would be responsible for identifying and collecting all necessary supplies for their prayer station.  Various sizes of tables would be available for the Station Leader to select.  Assistance would be provided by the leaders, if requested.

--Area Monitor - This person would be assigned to a particular area of the Prayer Fest to assist participants in the various activities.  They would be readily available to answer questions or guide participants.  One area monitor would likely be assigned to each room in Fellowship Hall.  Other area monitors would also be needed (i.e. Soaking Prayer, etc.)

  • Are you interested in serving at Road Trip! Vacation Bible Camp this year? VBC runs from July 14-18th this year. We will offer a morning and evening option.

There are several areas where you could serve at VBC. Our biggest need is generally preschool teachers and assistants. Some of the other ways to serve are:

crafts, registration, missions, music, child care, being a station leader (Bible story/science/music/recreation), being a crew leader (walking the kids from station to station), assisting a station leader (Bible story/science/music/recreation), or a behind the scenes role.

You can sign up on the VBC website. If you have any questions, please email Pastor Tawny or call the church office at 215-855-1643.
