Children's Activities

At Christ UMC we have an active Children's Ministry.  Children's Ministry programming is geared towards ages birth - 6th grade.  Older kids then fall under our Youth Ministry.  All of our volunteers that work with the children have clearances and meet all of our Safe Sanctuary standards.  In order to participate in any children's activities we ask that you register your child annually (once registered that covers them for the entire year).  Here is the online 2017-2018 Children's Ministries Registration.  If you can't register online the first time you attend an event you may ask the leader for a registration form.  For any questions about our Children's Ministry please contact Pastor Tawny Bernhardt at

  • Nursery

Our nursery is open for all children birth through age 4 beginning at 8:30 am through the end of the 11:00 worship service.  This is a great opportunity for the kids to play together while you attend worship or Sunday School.  An age appropriate lesson and activity will be taught during the Sunday School hour.  If you choose to keep your child with you during worship, the nursery is there for you in case you need to change a dirty diaper or your child needs a short break.  The nursery is located in Room 21 in the education wing.

  • Sunday School

Sunday School classes meet each Sunday between 9:45 and 10:45.

4 Years Old through Completed 1st Grade - During this traditional Sunday School experience, our youngest children will be reading the stories of Jacob, Daniel, and other Old Testament prophets and learning what these stories teach us about loving family, loving God, and loving others.

Completed 2nd - 5th Grade - Our older elementary children will be experiencing God's Word, the Bible, through science and food this summer!

  • Circuit Kids (Children's CHurch)

During the 11 am service each Sunday, after the Children's sermon, children age 4 through 3rd grade are dismissed from the Sanctuary to participate in this group.  It is a time for our younger congregants to learn Bible stories, do crafts, play games and socialize with each other.  You can pick your child up after the service in rooms 25-26 in the Education Wing.

  • Kids Choirs

There are many opportunities for you child to be involved in a choir.

Cherub Choir - This choir is for children in Kindergarten through 2nd grade.  Children learn songs that praise God and teach them God's love.  In this ensemble, children will also get a chance to play melody bells to accompany familiar hymns.  The Cherub Choir is directed by Linda Wagner and meets on Wednesday evenings from 6:00 - 6:30 in the Reichley Room.

Jesus Jammerz - This group is for Children from Kindergarten through 2nd grade. They use body percussion, percussion instruments and movement to express the music they are "jammin'" to each time. It is a lively group and a different style than any other group in our music ministries.  No singing is done in this choir and no prior musical experience is needed.  Just a love of music, movement and Jesus!  Miki Chelton leads the motion when they meet on Wednesdays from 5:15-5:45 in the music room.

Carol Choir - This choir is for children in 3rd through 6th grades.  This ensemble begins part singing and sings a variety of anthems, hymns and praise songs.  These children participate in a Junior Choir Festival every 3 years with several area churches.  They also occasionally sing in the community.  This choir is directed by Sherry Harris and they meet on Wednesday evenings from 5:55 - 6:30 in the Choir Room.

Melody Chimes - Children that are in 3rd through 6th grade can participate in this ensemble and play melody chimes, which is a precursor to handbells.  They work together to praise Jesus and express His word through their music.  The ability to read music is helpful, but not required.  This choir is directed by Linda Wagner and they meet Wednesday evening from 5:15-5:55 in the Fellowship Hall Room 7.

  • Missions

Backpack Program - Monthly during Sunday School our 4th through 6th grades help pack bags of snacks and food for a local elementary school.  These bags go home in the kids backpacks to help provide some meals and snacks over the weekend when they are not getting meals at school.  Our children enjoy packing these bags and participating in this ministry.

Jogging with Jesus - This is a newer event at our church and will take place in the spring.  It is a walk-a-thon for kids preschool through grade 6.  They will raise money to benefit our church capital campaign.  The kids get people to sponsor them for the event or per lap.  On the day of the event kids gather in the field at the church to walk and they are joined by Jesus and other Bible characters.  Kids get a race bag, a bib number and snacks afterwards.  Consider sponsoring a walker and coming out to cheer them on.

  • Service

There are two major areas our older kids (4th through 6th grade) can serve.

Acolyte - Kids can sign up to serve as acolyte at either first or second service.  Our acolytes light the candles, assist with communion and the offering as well as baptisms.  There is an acolyte training in the fall and new acolytes are initially paired up with an older acolyte to shadow them and learn the role.  There is an annual acolyte outing to thank those that serve in this capacity.  Please contact Pastor Tawny Bernhardt if you are interesting in serving in this role.

Circuit Kids Helper - Kids can sign up to assist our Circuit Kid leaders each week.  Signups are done on a calendar hanging outside of the Circuit Kids Room.

  • Annual Events

Vacation Bible School (VBS) - VBS is held annually in July and is held during the day from 9-noon for kids preschool - 6th grade.  The theme is different every year.  Kids will come in and learn bible stories, sing, play games, do crafts, have a snack and get to see a drama every day that goes with the theme.  Look for an announcement on the theme and registration in early March.

Trunk or Treat - This event is one of the newer initiatives of the church.  The Sunday prior to Halloween, church members and preschool families park in the back of the CUMC parking lot, decorate their cars and hand out candy and small trinkets to children who come by to Trick-or-Treat.  If the weather is not cooperating we will move it inside and have a "Trick-or-Treat Trail".  In addition to stocking up on candy, children have the opportunity to play games and win prizes with our Youth Group. This is a great event for families and trick-or-treating is open to all.

VBS Reunion - In the fall our VBS attendees or others that have never attended VBS can come and join us in our VBS Reunion.  This event is a great opportunity for kids to see their VBS friends again or experience, for maybe the first time, what a day at VBS would be like.  It will follow the theme from that year's VBS and kids will have a Bible story, games, a mission project, songs and even watch a movie.  We offer a full staff so parents can drop their children off and go have some time to themselves!

Family Movie Nights - Once a year we offer a family movie night to view a fun family friendly movie.  We supply a pizza dinner (donations accepted to offset the cost) and have popcorn and snacks for during the movie.  It's a relaxed time to have fun and family fellowship.
