Children's Activities

At Christ UMC we have an active Children's Ministry.  Children's Ministry programming is geared towards ages birth - 6th grade.  Older kids then fall under our Youth Ministry.  All of our volunteers that work with the children have clearances and meet all of our Safe Sanctuary standards.

In order to participate in any children's activities we ask that you register your child annually (once registered that covers them for the entire year).  Here is the online 2018-2019 Children's Ministries Registration.  If you can't register online the first time you attend an event you may ask the leader for a registration form.

For any questions about our Children's Ministry please contact Pastor Tawny Bernhardt at tawny.bernhardt@cumclansdale.org.

  • Nursery

Christ UMC offers two nurseries.  A staffed nursery is available so that parents can attend worship and Sunday school. The nursery is available from 8:30am until after the 11am service. Children, birth through 4 years old, can be dropped off and picked up as needed throughout the morning. An age appropriate lesson and activity will be taught during the Sunday School hour. All volunteers have appropriate clearances.

An unstaffed nursery is also available in if you have a young child you would like to keep with you, but need a diaper change, a quiet place to rock, or some space to move around. The worship service is broadcast through a speaker.

  • Sunday School

Sunday School classes meet each Sunday between 9:45 and 10:45.

This year our Pre-K through 6th Grade kids will be using the Deep Blue curriculum to study the Bible. You can register your child online or at drop off. Children have the opportunity to participate in a Christmas pageant in December, if they are interested. Classes are broken down by grade level.

  • Children's Worship

During the 11 am service each Sunday, children age 4 through 5th grades are dismissed from the Sanctuary prior to the sermon for Children's Worship.  It is a time for our younger congregants to hear God's Word in ways that they can connect to their lives.  They will engage in worship through song, prayer, crafts, and activities. Parents pick their children up after the service is over.

  • Kids Choirs

There are many opportunities for you child to be involved in a choir.

Precious Angels-This choir is our youngest choir for children 3-5 years old. This choir is directed by Sherry Harris and meets on Sunday mornings starting at 9:25 in the purple preschool room.

Cherub Choir - This choir is for children in Kindergarten through 2nd grade.  Children learn songs that praise God and teach them God's love.  In this ensemble, children will also get a chance to play melody bells to accompany familiar hymns.  The Cherub Choir is directed by Linda Wagner and meets on Wednesday evenings from 6:00 - 6:30 in the Reichley Room.

Jesus Jammerz - This group is for Children from Kindergarten through 2nd grade. They use body percussion, percussion instruments and movement to express the music they are "jammin'" to each time. It is a lively group and a different style than any other group in our music ministries.  No singing is done in this choir and no prior musical experience is needed.  Just a love of music, movement and Jesus!  Miki Chelton leads the motion when they meet on Wednesdays from 5:15-5:45 in the music room.

Carol Choir - This choir is for children in 3rd through 6th grades.  This ensemble begins part singing and sings a variety of anthems, hymns and praise songs.  These children participate in a Junior Choir Festival every 3 years with several area churches.  They also occasionally sing in the community.  This choir is directed by Sherry Harris and they meet on Wednesday evenings from 5:55 - 6:30 in the Choir Room.

Melody Chimes - Children that are in 3rd through 6th grade can participate in this ensemble and play melody chimes, which is a precursor to handbells.  They work together to praise Jesus and express His word through their music.  The ability to read music is helpful, but not required.  This choir is directed by Linda Wagner and they meet Wednesday evening from 5:15-5:55 in the Fellowship Hall Room 7.

  • 46 Group

Throughout the year, our fourth through sixth graders are invited to activities just for them...including ice skating, jumping at a trampoline gym, and a movie night!

  • Missions

Backpack Program - Monthly during Sunday School our 4th through 6th grades help pack bags of snacks and food for a local elementary school.  These bags go home in the kids backpacks to help provide some meals and snacks over the weekend when they are not getting meals at school.  Our children enjoy packing these bags and participating in this ministry.

  • Service

There are two major areas our older kids (4th through 6th grade) can serve.

Acolyte - Kids can sign up to serve as acolyte at either first or second service.  Our acolytes light the candles, assist with communion and the offering as well as baptisms.  There is an acolyte training in the fall and new acolytes are initially paired up with an older acolyte to shadow them and learn the role.  There is an annual acolyte outing to thank those that serve in this capacity.

Children's Worship Helper - Our sixth graders can assist our Children's Worship leaders each week.

Please contact Pastor Tawny Bernhardt if you are interested in serving in either of these roles.

  • Annual Events

Vacation Bible School (Kid's Camp) - Registration will open March 1st for Vacation Bible School 2020. There are two separate times to choose from, a daytime and an evening option: 9-Noon or 6:00-8:30 PM. VBS is open to children from age 4 (by September 1, 2019) through 6th grade and includes daily snacks, crafts, science, games, songs, Bible stories and more!

Trunk or Treat - This event is one of the newer initiatives of the church.  The Sunday prior to Halloween, church members and preschool families park in the back of the CUMC parking lot, decorate their cars and hand out candy and small trinkets to children who come by to Trick-or-Treat.  If the weather is not cooperating we will move it inside and have a "Trick-or-Treat Trail".  In addition to stocking up on candy, children have the opportunity to play games and win prizes with our Youth Group. This is a great event for families and trick-or-treating is open to all.

VBS Reunion - Each year our VBS attendees or others that have never attended VBS can come and join us in our VBS Reunion.  This event is a great opportunity for kids to see their VBS friends again or experience, for maybe the first time, what a day at VBS would be like.  It will follow the theme from that year's VBS and kids will have a Bible story, games, a mission project, songs and even watch a movie.  We offer a full staff so parents can drop their children off and go have some time to themselves!

Family Movie Nights - Once a year we offer a family movie night to view a fun family friendly movie.  We supply a pizza dinner (donations accepted to offset the cost) and have popcorn and snacks for during the movie.  It's a relaxed time to have fun and family fellowship.
